If your laptop disappeared today, what would you lose? Here’s a simple 3-layer backup plan.
Layer 1: Cloud sync (everyday safety)
Use a reputable cloud drive for Documents/Desktop. It guards against accidental deletion and device loss.
Layer 2: External drive (weekly snapshot)
Plug in a portable SSD once a week; let built-in backup tools run (File History/Time Machine). Unplug and store separately.
Layer 3: Off-site copy (monthly)
Keep a second drive at a different location or use an encrypted cloud backup service. This covers theft or fire.
Golden rules
-
3-2-1 rule: 3 copies, 2 different media, 1 off-site.
-
Test restores: Once a month, restore one file to prove it works.
-
Label drives & calendars: Put a 10-minute “backup check” on Sundays.
